ATEX (2014/34/EU) and IECEx Certification - Equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres
The word “ATEX” is actually an abbreviation of the French term “ATmosphere EXplosible” and become a worldwide definition for explosive atmospheres.
Directive for equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres (2014/34/EU), commonly known as ATEX equipment directive or ATEX 214, is an EU legislation which defines the essential health and safety requirements for manufacturing, and sets rules about market availability, free movement and conformity assessment of these products.
While ATEX directive is in force in European countries, there are also other legislations or schemes like IECEx, GOST or Inmetro which brings similar requirements according to harmonized standards and related protection levels.
CE, Ex and/or similar marking is mandatory for most equipment and protective systems using in explosive environments. In addition, different legislations like SEVESO (2012/18/EU) and ATEX 137 workplace (1999/92/EC) are also refer to use of certified equipment in hazardous explosive areas.
